The Five Stages of Freedom

Kaavya Mehrotra

Dying.

The last of the 5 stages.

‍

Falling.

“Block out the negativity” they said.

“Maybe you should eat less”

Block it out.

“So annoying”

Stop please make it stop.

“You’re too loud”

I’m trying.

“You complain too much”

‍

Flying.

Liberation, manumission, salvation, redemption, deliverance.

That feeling of triumph.

Victory only lasts so long.

‍

Soaring.

But I want to dance.

Maybe I can prove them wrong.

I try and try and try.

falling

and suddenly It pays off.

‍

Dreaming.

I've decided to not go for my dreams.

When I was younger, I wanted to be a professional dancer.

“Too unrealistic,” they said.

Too unrealistic.

So I stopped dreaming.

‍

I despise the word “free.”
