The Next Fall

Sophia Yao

Under charcoal gray skies I feel my resolve shake

Under the will of nature I let my weary heart break

Against the fear of failure I let my tired body fall

Against the failing sunlight I go down, once so tall

Let myself rest under a diligent earthworm’s toil

Let myself dissolve into the warmth of the Earth’s soil

Remember daydreams of a girl so strong

A girl so afraid, so scared all along

Memories of nights spent pacing back and forth

Recollections of lives unlived on unknown Earths

Looking up at pale blue skies

Listening to the dark birds cry

Feeling the ache of the sky high fall

Reeling in my fear of it all

Learning to heal, learning to grow

Learning to listen, learning when to go.

When spring comes, bringing bright sun and soft rain

I will be healed, I will be tall,

I will be ready for my next fall.
