The Life "Cycle"

Sahana Inumpudi

Cycles.

They are the foundation of possibilities…

Without cycles,

A chaotic spell would take place

Without ever being cast.

Cycles are the routines that birthed the existence

Of all our beautiful things and experiences.

They are the nonmoving world

That allows change to unfold.

The most famous cycle of all,

In movies,

And books,

Is life.

But I would argue against that,

Life is not a cycle.

Cycles are a repeating duty:

A firmly set sequence.

But life is a journey

That eventually ends.

Life starts with youth

A jumble of merry squeals and agonized cries.

A book of simplicity

And when life’s at its height.

And then there’s adulthood

A hardship of responsibility and earning.

Go to work,

Earn your pay.

Productivity creates

A family for days.

Then finally, elderhood

Is a calm period of relaxation.

Blissfull as you slow down,

And drift into rest.

And then it’s all over.

No going back,

No anything.

It’s done.

Life’s not a cycle,

It’s a story.

You can choose to write it

Or you can play a game of telephone.

The story could be short and heart-wrenching,

Or dense and exciting.

But the one thing you can’t do

Is go back.

You will always be in the present

With hands on the future.

So do not wait

For the same moment

To return.

It will not.

Dream what you want.

Do what you can’t.

There’s only some time until

The end of your “cycle”.
