Skyscrapers

Marley Thornson

I stood on the edge of a skyscraper.

With no intention of coming down.

I watched the birds soar in the sky.

The wind being my only sound.

I watched as others joined me.

Some from up above, others climbing from yonder bound’

I watched as those newcomers jumped up towards the stars.

Some flew above the clouds, others only hit the ground.

I stayed on my skyscraper.

With no intention of coming down.d

I wish there was a message

A sign of warning, of sorry, maybe even just a peep

Because one day without a notice

My skyscraper fell to its knees

Their legs gave out

Its old bones far too weak

With the skyscraper I fell

No not the others, just me

They abandoned this skyscraper

Maybe they got the message to leave

Whereas I stayed with my throne

Until its life made a final screech

Now I’m on the ground

Some place I’d never thought I’d be

I had no intentions of coming down

Yet here I am, for everyone to to see

Down here in this foreign place

The floor is soaked with my tears

I haven’t moved an inch

I don’t think I will in the next couple of years

I will lay here on my ground

And watch all my other peers

One day they called out to me

From a building a couple hundred feet above

They called out to me, nameless as I was

And for the first time in forever, my heart gave a little beat

It was new

It was abrupt

But I finally knew what to do

After all, once you hit rock bottom, the only way you can go is up
